    Where the other four fifths come from

    Brazil and Colombia carry of world exports in this dataset, and they are the only two origins traced to the municipality. Everywhere else the chain stops at the national border — Vietnam's 1.4 million tonnes arrive as a single undifferentiated block. The map below is shaded by export volume; the two countries outlined in amber are the ones the explorer above can open up.

        About the data. Trase global coffee supply chain, calendar year 2020: 975,338 customs-linked records covering green and processed coffee (HS 0901 and 2101.11/12). Volumes are mass_tonnes as shipped. "Buyer" and "exporter" use Trase's highest-known corporate owner group, so subsidiaries roll up to their parent.

        Read it carefully. Municipality attribution is Trase's modelled allocation of exports back to production areas, not a shipment-by-shipment record — treat a single municipality's figure as an estimate and the pattern across many as the signal. Records with no known origin region (1.6% of Brazilian and 3.3% of Colombian volume) are excluded from the maps. 80,160 records carry an unknown importer. Several high-income countries appear as origins on the world map because Trase records the country an export left from: the United States, Germany and their peers re-export processed and instant coffee (HS 2101) they did not grow. The two map panels are drawn at their own scales and are not size-comparable; the colour scale rescales to whichever filter is active, so shading shows the shape of a supply shed rather than its absolute size.

        Boundaries: GADM 4.1 (municipalities, levels 1–2) and Natural Earth (world). Colombian DANE codes matched to GADM by department and name; all 754 municipalities in the data resolved to a polygon.
